The SOPGA caught up with Casey to talk about his journey to becoming a member of the PGA of America.
SOPGA: Who or what inspired you to get involved with the GAME of golf?
Casey Lewis, PGA: My dad has always been a huge inspiration for me to get involved with the game of golf. One of my fondest memories as a kid was going out and playing the Bruin Golf Course with him every Sunday morning during the summer. We would always play 18 holes and go out to eat following every round. It was during these rounds with my dad that I really developed a love for the game. It wasn’t just these rounds with my dad that made me love the game, but also the time we would spend together when he would take me to all my junior tournaments, and the constant support that both him and my mom gave me throughout my junior golf career.
SOPGA: Who or what inspired you to get involved with the BUSINESS of golf?
CL: My inspiration to get involved with the business of golf came from a combination of my love for the game, while also having the opportunity to meet and develop relationships with all our members and guests. I’ve always loved the game, and working in the business side allows me to connect with others who share that same passion for the game of golf. Being a Golf Professional is the perfect blend of personal passion and professional growth, which motivates me to make a meaningful impact in the game of golf.
SOPGA: What are you most looking forward to pursuing now that you are a PGA of America Member?
CL: As a PGA of America member, I’m most excited about the opportunity to continue growing my career and improving my skills as a Golf Professional. I’m looking forward to further developing my skills in all aspects of the industry and providing my members with the best experiences possible. Being a part of the PGA of America gives me the opportunity to be a part of a respected community and continue to contribute to the game of golf in a meaningful way and I look forward to expanding my network with my fellow golf professionals within our section.
SOPGA: What about the game makes you LOVE golf?
CL: What I love most about the game of golf is all the challenges that you face. It constantly pushes me to want to improve both physically and mentally. I also love the sense of community that golf brings from playing with both family and friends, while also having the opportunity to meet new people that share the same passion for the game.
SOPGA: Have there been any mentors who have assisted your career along the way to PGA Membership that you would like to thank?
CL: I would like to thank a couple of key mentors that I have had during my time working in the golf industry. First, Andy Anderson, who gave me my first opportunity to work in the industry at Indian Ridge Golf Course. He helped me learn and develop a passion for the business side of the game. I will always be grateful for the 3 years that I spent working for him. I also want to thank Bob Stephens, who I have had the privilege of working for the past 6 years. Without his mentorship, I truly believe that I would not be in the position that I am today. It is hard to put into words the value and experience I gained while working with him. I have had so many great experiences with other mentors and people within the industry, but when reflecting on my time in the Associates Program both Andy and Bob stand out on the roles they played in my development as a Golf Professional.
