Dayton, OH — Andy Montgomery, PGA Director of Golf at Kinsale Golf & Fitness, continued his recent strong play and rode it to a victory at the SOPGA Individual Match Play Championship. Fresh off a victory at the New Albany Classic, Montgomery rolled through the field to win his second consecutive event on September 15-16 at Miami Valley Golf Club.
Montgomery beat his good friend and the event’s defending champion, Bob Sowards, PGA 2 up to complete a wire-to-wire victory in the final match of the competition.
Montgomery survived a scare in his first-round match, needing a back nine comeback to beat Larry King, PGA Head Golf Professional at Tri-County Golf Ranch. He then rolled through his next two matches, winning them 4&3 and 5&4 before needing 19 holes to beat Jeff Olson, PGA in the semifinal match.
Sowards also survived some early adversity before settling in the rest of the way. After a first-round bye, Sowards holed out for eagle on the 19th hole to narrowly escape a tight match with Ben Stewart, PGA in the second round. He then rattled off 4&3 and 2&1 victories before running into Montgomery and falling just short in his quest to repeat as individual match play champion.
Montgomery jumped out to an early lead in the finals and never looked back. He eagled the first hole of the match, then made par on hole number two to take an early 2 up lead. He stretched the lead as far as 3 up after Sowards made bogey on number six. Montgomery eventually gave one back with a bogey on number 11, but got it right back on number 12. Sowards made a birdie on number 13 to draw closer again, but both players would par out as Montgomery held on for the victory.
The Section staff would like to thank Cameron Williams and his staff at Miami Valley Golf Club for hosting the event once again.
