Powell, OH – Mike Thomas, PGA of Vineyard Golf Course fired a 3-under-par 69 on Monday to claim a one stroke victory at the Capital City Classic at Wedgewood Golf & Country Club. Thomas beat a trio of players, including Steve Klick, PGA, Bob Sowards, PGA and Tim Krapfel, PGA, who all shot 70.

Thomas, who played in the final group of the day, knew exactly what he needed to do after turning at 2-under-par. By the time he turned, Klick and Sowards have both turned in their final scores so Thomas had a pretty good idea of what score he needed to post. He did some scoreboard watching on his back nine to make sure nobody came in lower, but Krapfel’s 70 was the only other score to beat for Thomas.

Back-to-back birdies on holes 13 & 14 pushed Thomas into the driver’s seat at 4-under-par with only three holes to go. He made par on 16 & 17 to give himself some breathing room heading into a tough 18th hole. With water running up the right side of the hole the 584-yard par-5 18th hole played as the toughest hole of the day, averaging 0.68 stokes over par. Thomas ended up making his only bogey of his round on the final hole, but thanks to the cushion he built earlier he knew he could survive that bogey.

The Section staff would like to extend a huge thank you to Chris Casto, PGA and his staff for hosting the event. The course was in great condition and made for an enjoyable experience for all.
