CINCINNATI, Ohio – Sam Arnold, PGA, is a two-seed everyone saw coming so there wasn’t much ‘surviving’ as he ‘advanced’ his way through the stacked bracket of Southern Ohio PGA Professionals.
Arnold, General Manager at Vineyard Golf Course, won his opening matches at Western Hills Country Club Monday, March 31, defeating Melissa Yeazell, PGA, of Tri-County Golf Ranch in the opening round. He then took out Dave Bahr, PGA, in the second round, 1 up.
On the top side of the bracket, #1 seed Michael Auterson, PGA, won his first two rounds, defeating Larry King, PGA, and Doug Wade, PGA, during the opening day. The 2024 Greater Cincinnati Matchplay Champion would not repeat however, after Corey Weckerling, PGA, upset him in the third round Tuesday morning.
Weckerling, of Moraine Country Club, advanced to the Finals thanks to that win over the defending champ. Arnold had to defeat Taylor Suggs, PGA, to advance to the championship round.
The final round started hot with Arnold opening with two-straight birdies and a 2-up lead. Weckerling’s steady opening of seven straight pars ended with a birdie on #8, cutting Arnold’s lead to 1-up. Arnold’s birdies on #11 and #16 sealed the victory in the early afternoon.
